I first learned some traditional bookbinding with Doug Himes at BYU, this was so much fun I took a student job at the Harold B. Lee Library Book Preservation Department, where I learned to repair books, and received additional binding instruction from Robert Espinosa and Randy Silverman.  Later I spent a year learning bookbinding from Arno Werner in Connecticut.
